Ads that strikes you
Are you one of those
who runs to the kitchen
to make yourself a snack during TV commercials?
Do you look at the ads in the newspaper?
Or
do you scarcely notice them?
Or
are you one of those who grimaces
at the ads on the internet and closes
the irritating pop-up screen that escaped your
browser's pop-up blocker?
Let's face it
– all ads comprises of companies
and corporations blowing their own
trumpet and telling the rest of the
world how good they are!
All these companies spend a lot of time
and money to do this, to remain
'visible'.
Sometimes,
even governments use
the media to spread messages and awareness.
Similarly,
political parties often advertise
to gain their own agenda.
All ads carry a message,
some of which we may not agree with.
Nevertheless, there are original
and creative ads that really stands out.
We can look at some of these at
http://www.adsoftheworld.com.
The website hosts ads
from all over the world including
Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and New Zealand
there is also a category called
'International'.
The ads have been selected from
print, internet, TV and radio.
There is yet another category named
'ambient',
wherein all types of ads are covered.
This site is easy to browse
as the categories are clearly labeled
and it is searchable by keywords as well.
In addition,
every picture the visitor clicks
on is tagged by region,
category, and as many keywords as applicable,
for more targeted browsing.
For example,
the ads for a golf academy in
Africa have the pictures
of a frustrated golfer,
and have tags
'Africa' and 'Education'; And
the caption says "Don't get mad. Get better."
The sidebar on the left of the screen
gives access to
archives, forums, blogs,
and other links to a few select
advertising agencies
which are posted for the excellence of their work.
The 'Forums'
lead us to
'Exhibition'
where anyone can post their work
and ask for comments.
This helps advertising artists
and rookies get an idea about their work.
The
'Dungeon'
is where all topics of advertising are discussed.
And
then there are postings in
Chinese, French and Spanish!
The creator of the site has his
own blog
where he lists his favourites
and has examples of some
'unfortunately placed ads'
from newspapers and billboards
around the world - an example
of is a warning
about the dangers of obesity placed right
above a McDonald's ad!
This website takes us on a trip
round the world to
see, learn, create and discuss
the happenings and is
a real collection of creativity!
